2-day summit trek with meals
Night: Toubkal refuge
Same path, same refuge, same summit. The extra day changes where you sleep first and how your body copes with the height.
The short answer
Book two days if you are fit, hike regularly and have slept above 3,000 m without trouble. Book three days if altitude is new to you, if you want mules to carry your bag, or if you would rather not walk 10 to 12 hours on summit day straight after a short night.
Four days rarely adds much: the four-day trek by Marrakech Day Trips - Tours is the two-day route with extra nights in Imlil, and two reviewers found it longer than they needed.

Night: Imlil, then the refuge
Every summit trek from Marrakech drives to Imlil at 1,740 m, walks up the Mizane valley past Aremd and the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch to the refuge at 3,207 m, and goes for the top at 4,167 m in the dark of the next morning. The two-day version does all of that in one go. The three-day version adds a first night lower down. Pick by your altitude experience, then by group size.
You are used to long mountain days and have slept above 3,000 m before. Day 2 then is hard but doable, and you are back in Marrakech that evening.
The first night is lower, in Imlil, so the body gets used to the height before the refuge. Mules carry the main luggage on these treks.
A group limit keeps the pace closer to yours on summit day, which is what several critical reviews of the big groups are about.
A private option sets the pace and the breaks around you. The route, the refuge and the rental gear stay the same as in the group.

Read from each product page in November 2026. Where a listing is silent, ask the operator before you count on it.
The route above Imlil is the same on both. What moves is the first night and the length of the first walking day.
| Two days | Three days | |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Marrakech to Imlil, then five to six hours to the refuge at 3,207 m | Marrakech to Imlil and a first walk, night in Imlil |
| Day 2 | Summit at 4,167 m before sunrise, down to Imlil, 10 to 12 hours of walking, drive to Marrakech | Imlil to the refuge, four to six hours |
| Day 3 | Summit, down to Imlil, drive to Marrakech |
On the three-day trek by Marrakech Day Trips - Tours, day 1 is a walk over the Tizi n’Tamatert pass from Imlil with a night back in the village. Toubkal Ascent spends the first evening in Imlil. Both reach the refuge on day 2 and climb the summit on day 3.
On the two-day trek you sleep at 3,207 m on your first night in the mountains and start for 4,167 m a few hours later. Short nights in the dormitory and dizziness on the way down come up in the reviews; one guest of the two-day trek felt really dizzy on the descent and wished for longer breaks. A night in Imlil first does not replace real acclimatisation, but it spreads the climb over more time and leaves you less tired on summit day. More on how hard the climb is.
The start is in the dark: reviewers name wake-up calls from 2 am, Berber Tours & Adventures gives breakfast at 5 and the start at 5:30. The summit comes after three to four hours of walking. After a short stop on top you go back down to the refuge, then all the way to Imlil and into the van to Marrakech. The listings give 10 to 12 hours of walking for that day. One reviewer was back in Marrakech at 6 pm. That is the day that decides whether two days is right for you.
On the three-day and four-day summit treks mules carry the main luggage, and you walk with a daypack. On the most-booked two-day treks by Marrakech Day Trips - Tours and Mouslih tour, a mule is on the list of things not included and is paid in Imlil. The sleeping bag, crampons and ice axe are rented in Imlil on most listings, whatever the length. See what each listing includes.
The number of days does not set the group size, the operator does. Berber Tours & Adventures limits its two-day trek to 10 participants, Mouslih tour to 15, and the three-day trek by Marrakech Day Trips - Tours to 14. Critical reviews of the big two-day groups are mostly about pace: a guide who walked too fast, little time at the top, a group strung out on the path. If you know you are slow uphill, a smaller group or a private option helps more than an extra day.
Whichever length you book, the refuge night is in a shared dormitory with bunk beds and blankets. Bring a head torch, warm layers for the summit and cash in small notes for water and snacks on the path. More on the night at the refuge.
Guests of the three-day trek mention the acclimatising walk and a pace that fit the group. Two guests of the four-day trek felt three days would have been enough.
“Omar the guide was amazing as he led us according to our pace through the acclimatizing climb and especially the summit. Very good food on the way considering the altitude. Would love to try again in winter.”
“Very physically and emotionally demanding. It’s involves long hiking days and on summit day you are starting at around 2-3am and getting back to Marrakesh at 6pm. There is equipment to hire but I recommend bringing your own hiking shoes and waterproof jacket with you as the quality isn’t guaranteed if you hire, but other essentials like walking polls, head torches and sleeping bag you can hire from the guide in Imil for a small extra cost and they are perfectly good. … you also need cash as places don’t except card.”
“Make sure you check carefully before the trip; the trekking is long and difficult. The altitude is high and the climb is steep, at night. Also, 2 or 3 days are perfect; 4 days are too long. I spent two days alone in Imlil; one would have been enough.”
“We really enjoyed the three day trek. While very challenging, it was well worth it. Our guide Morad looked after the group very well, ensuring each day was safe, and enjoyable.”
“Great trip, but I hopped on the 2-day and stayed in Imlil for an extra night. I think 4 days is unnecessary unless you are prone to altitude sickness. Guides were amazing and the overall experience was fantastic.”
Reviews by trekkers who booked through GetYourGuide.
For fit hikers with some altitude experience, yes. Day 1 is five to six hours to the refuge, day 2 is the summit and the full descent to Imlil, with 10 to 12 hours of walking. If you have never been above 3,000 m, three days is the safer choice.
Only on the first day. Marrakech Day Trips - Tours walks over the Tizi n’Tamatert pass near Imlil, Toubkal Ascent spends the first night in Imlil. From day 2 both follow the usual path via Sidi Chamharouch to the refuge and the summit.
Rarely. The four-day trek by Marrakech Day Trips - Tours adds nights in Imlil before and after the refuge. Two reviewers called it the two-day route with extra nights in a village with little to do; one would have stayed one extra night, not two.
Yes, at 4,167 m mild symptoms such as headache and dizziness are common, especially on the two-day trek. Several listings say the trek is not suitable for people with altitude sickness. Drink enough, tell your guide if you feel unwell, and turn back if symptoms get worse.
On the two-day trek it ends in Marrakech, after the summit and the full descent. On the three-day trek the summit is on day 3 and also ends in Marrakech, but you arrive at the refuge less tired. The four-day trek ends summit day in Imlil.
