The village treks start in Imlil like the Toubkal climb, then turn off the summit path and cross the passes into the neighbouring valleys: Azzaden to the west, Imnan to the east. On most of them you walk four to seven hours a day, sleep in a Berber guesthouse or gîte, and stay well below 3,000 m.

Most treks go west first. Over Tizi Mzik, at about 2,500 m, the path drops into the Azzaden valley, past the Tamsoult or Igholidn waterfalls to Tizi Oussem, where Marrakech Day Trips - Tours, Omar Adventures-morocco and Atlas Mountains view spend the night. The way back runs through Id Issa and over Tizi Oudid to Matat, with its walnut grove, or down to Imlil. The routes east cross Tizi n’Tamatert, at 2,270 to 2,300 m depending on the listing, into the Imnan valley to Tachdirt. The three-day trek of Marrakech Day Trips - Tours links both sides, from Tachdirt via Ikkis and Aguersiwal over the Oudit pass to Ait Aissa, then back over Tizi Mzik.

The nights are in Berber guesthouses and gîtes in the villages, simple rooms with blankets. Several listings and reviewers stress how basic they are: Omar Adventures-morocco calls its guesthouse simple, Marrakech Day Trips - Tours says the same about the three-day trek, and guests mention shared rooms, no sheets and short hot showers. Bring a towel, toilet paper and flip-flops. Mouslih tour starts its three days with a night in a riad in Imlil, and the gîte at Ait Aissa offers an optional hammam. Marrakech Day Trips - Tours also warns of limited phone signal on its three-day trek. Our packing list has the rest.
Omar Adventures-morocco, Atlas Mountains view and Mouslih tour include mules for the bags. On the three-day trek of Marrakech Day Trips - Tours the luggage is moved between villages where that applies, and on its Imnan valley trek a mule team appears in the description. The two-day trek to Tizi Oussem of Marrakech Day Trips - Tours asks for a small backpack only; it is also the only village trek with sleeping bags in the price.
Tours From Marrakech sells a different kind of trip. You walk one to four hours a day, as you choose, through the Agoundiss, Ijoukak and Ouirgane valleys, visit the Tinmel mosque and a women’s cooperative, and ride a camel or a horse for half an hour. Henna, entrance fees and water are included, the night is in a riad, and every activity is optional. Book it for the villages, not for the walking.
People who want the High Atlas without 4,167 m, a night at 3,207 m and a summit day of 10 to 12 hours. The two-day trek to Tizi Oussem and the Atlas Mountains view trek are written for beginners with basic fitness, and one guest walked with his mother on her 70th birthday. If you are fit and curious about the summit, compare the three-day summit trek instead: it also starts with a pass walk near Imlil. The villages around Imlil were hit by the Al Haouz earthquake in September 2023; rebuilding continues, and the treks run again.
