Planning the Toubkal climb

How hard is Toubkal?

No ropes and no climbing, but a long second day that ends 2,400 m lower than the summit.

The short answer

Toubkal is a hard walk, not a climb. Marrakech Day Trips - Tours calls it “a challenging walk rather than a climb”, with easy scrambling and snow slopes in winter. Day 1 is five to six hours from Imlil (1,740 m) to the refuge (3,207 m). Day 2 is the summit at 4,167 m and the whole way back to Imlil, 10 to 12 hours of walking.

What makes it hard is the altitude and the length of summit day, not technique. If you have never been above 3,000 m, book three days.

The path from Imlil to the summit has no ladders or fixed ropes. Above the refuge it turns into scree and loose stones, and in the cold months into snow. You gain about 1,470 m on day 1 and almost 1,000 m more before sunrise on day 2, then walk all of it back down. Choose the trek by how you cope with height and with a very long day.

Fit and used to long days

The heights on the way

All summit treks here use the same path up the Mizane valley. The three-day treks add a lower first day around Imlil.

Day 1 and summit day

Day 1 is steady uphill on mule tracks. Most listings give five to six hours to the refuge with a lunch stop at Sidi Chamharouch; one reviewer walked seven hours and 14 km.

Summit day starts in the dark. Berber Tours & Adventures serves breakfast around 5 and leaves at 5:30; reviewers of other treks name wake-up calls between 2 and 3:30 am. Click Excursions takes the southern route over scree. The top comes after three to four hours, and the stay there is short: Berber Tours & Adventures plans 25 minutes. Then you go down to the refuge for lunch and on to Imlil. Omar Adventures-morocco gives around 10 to 12 hours of walking for the day plus 1.5 hours of driving. The choice between two or three days mostly depends on this day.

Altitude sickness

At 3,207 m in the refuge and 4,167 m on top, headache, poor sleep and dizziness are common. The two-day trek gives your body one short night to adjust. One reviewer felt very dizzy on the way down and wished for longer breaks. Drink enough, walk slowly from the start and tell the guide early if you feel unwell; going down is the remedy. Click Excursions says its guide may change or stop the route for safety. Several listings exclude people with altitude sickness altogether.

Who the listings say should not go

These exclusions are copied from the “Not suitable for” sections. Pregnant women are excluded on most summit listings.

Fitness you need

Reviewers who enjoyed the climb describe it as demanding and recommend a good base of fitness. If you can walk six to seven hours in hills with a daypack and then do it again the next day, you are close. Train on long descents as well: knees and thighs suffer most on the 2,400 m down from the top. Sturdy ankle boots help on the scree; one guest of the four-day trek turned back because the group pace was too fast for them.

Snow changes the grade. From November to April crampons and an ice axe may be needed, and the guide decides on the day whether the top is safe. More on Toubkal in winter. What to bring is on the packing list.

Trekkers on effort and pace

Most guests found the climb hard but fair and mention the cold at the top, short breaks on the descent and the need for some hiking experience. Two reviewers felt the guide set a pace that was too fast for their group.

“Excellent experience. The guides (Mohamed and Abdessalam) were great. Very good organization (journey from Marrakech, meals, overnight stay at the refuge). A good level of fitness is required, as the ascent to the summit on the second day is demanding. And bring warm clothes. We were at the summit for sunrise at 5:30 a.m.”

“I liked the structure of the trip. It wasn't easy but as expected and I really liked the challenge. The hike is great with amazing views. Guides were great and took care of us. Only thing I would improve is to allow more time for breaks especially when descending the peak because they didn't allow much time while I was feeling really dizzy.”

“The hike to Toubkal was great! We would recommend it to anyone with a little hiking experience. The sunrise at 4,167 m is especially unforgettable and cold (even in summer, so remember to bring appropriate clothing).”

“We booked the hike for 4 ppl. 3 of us were 50 years old. The guide didn’t adjust pace of the hike to our need. We wanted to go slowly but on the day when we supposed to reach summit we were going at the pace other groups (of mostly ppl in their 20s and 30s) were. … Otherwise it was nice to hike all the way up to the refuge, give it a go to reach the summit but having to return due to too fast pace (that was not adjusted to our needs) and then walk down among these magnificent mountains.”

“Mount Toubkal itself and the sunrise are an incredible experience, but the organisation leaves a lot to be desired. … During the summit attempt, they imposed a pace that was too fast and erratic, without taking into account acclimatisation and the needs of the participants. … The group was too large for the trek to be smooth. To sum up: it's worth climbing to the summit, but if comfort and flexibility are important to you, it's better to pay extra for a smaller group or a private guide.”

FAQ

Do I need climbing experience for Toubkal?

No. The normal route is a walk on mule paths and scree with some easy scrambling. In winter you may need crampons and an ice axe, which most listings leave to rent in Imlil.

How many hours do you walk on Toubkal?

On the two-day trek, five to six hours on day 1 to the refuge and 10 to 12 hours on day 2 for the summit and the descent to Imlil. The summit itself is three to four hours above the refuge.

How high is the Toubkal refuge?

The refuge stands at 3,207 m. Imlil, where the walk starts, is at 1,740 m, and the summit at 4,167 m.

Can beginners climb Toubkal?

Fit beginners can, but they should book three days and a small group. If long days in the hills are new to you, a village trek around Imlil is the gentler start.

What if I feel ill on the way up?

Tell your guide straight away. Going down is the cure for altitude sickness, and guides can stop the ascent for safety. Click Excursions says so on its listing.
